Throwing the Ball

Back, back, his body ripples like water

And the dance begins

Elbows bend, an arm stiffens

Cocked behind his head

Now he compresses, tense like a spring

Muscles coiled like ropes

Beneath his diamond skin

Suddenly, the release:

He bursts from the pause

Arms wheeling

Propelled on a panther’s leg

He lingers in space, extending, reaching and

Snap

The ball in flight

Continues the dance

As the man settles back to watch
