Who is Afraid?

Who is afraid?

It’s a question we ask

Around camp fires

Or when someone writes

A death threat

On the wall of our dorm

But not when we walk

From class to class

Because seeing other people

Is hard

And loving them

Is hard

When we barely have the strength

To love ourselves

But it’s important that

We wonder

Silently and aloud:

Who has to walk around

Feeling nervous?

And who has to remember

The time someone told them

They weren’t fit to live –

At least not in their house –

Or the time their friends left

When they found out the truth

Or the time their first kiss

Tore them apart

And filled them with shame

For daring to fall in love

For daring to struggle

For daring to exist
