Never Met You

If I had never met you

I would hear the whistling man

And feel joy

But now every note is like an alarm:

“Something is wrong here”

“Something is wrong”

“Wake up and run to another place”

If I had never met you

I wouldn’t have tasted acrid love

Cold and new, like iron on my tongue

Before it pierced me like a hook

I wouldn’t have writhed

As you tore me from your line

And tossed me back to the waves

Poems, like the sea

Know grief
